Auckland is based around 2 large harbours, a major city in New Zealand’s North Island. A perfect place to start your travel adventure. Although Auckland is a fantastic city and a great experience, the minute you set foot outside Auckland you are welcomed with beautiful scenery everywhere you go.
There are so many places that you can explore that's not far from Auckland and while staying in this amazing city it is the perfect opportunity to do just that.
So what can you experience in and around Auckland?
Sky Tower
In the centre of Auckland is the iconic Sky Tower which is 220 metres high and has panoramic views of the whole city. The current admission to see these spectacular views are $32 (£16) for adults and $13 (£7) for children age 6-14 (Under 5's go FREE).
If dining with a view is what you're after, then you're spoilt for choice with three restaurants/cafes up the Sky Tower - Orbit 360˚ dining revolving restaurant, the elegant sugar club and the Sky Café.
Waiheke Island
Waiheke Island is the most populated and the second-largest island in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand. It is a haven of beautiful vineyards, olive groves and beaches, all just a 40-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland. Once there it is very easy to get around, you can either use the usual bus services available if you are looking for the cheapest option or if you are after something a little simpler then the Explorer Hop-on Hop-off buses is a perfect alternative which will take you all around the island.
Rangitoto Island
Rangitoto Island is one of Aucklands most unique and iconic locations, being located only a 25 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland, makes this spectacular volcanic island destination a favourite for both tourists and locals alike.
Rangitoto Island offers a range of activities for the family, including walking / hiking, fishing, camping and sea kayaking, plus many more.
Phia Beach
Phia Beach to the most famous surf beach in New Zealand. This stunning black volcanic sand beach is located just 45 minutes west of Auckland and it’s one of the Kiwi’s fave getaways.
You can get surfing lessons here, abseil down Piha canyon, or hike around seeing fantastic scenery definitely not one to miss.
Top tip: Be mindful what you bring, we brought our beautiful tesalate beach towel to the beach and it smelt for days even after we washed it a couple of times.
